John Walmsley is a photographer who took some great pictures of Summerhill school in the late sixties. He had a real feel for the place. The photographs went into a book called Neill and Summerhill that you can find on Abe books or Amazon, or you can contact the photographer himself through his website if you want a print.
I loved the pictures of the Big Beech and the kids playing in the lounge.
This photographic record is invaluable as material changes happen at the school- improvements to the buildings, for example- and some of the older dispositions get fuzzy in the memory. The curious thing for me though is how little it has changed in essence, how close it is to the way it always was.
